A Moment to Act: ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning and School Safety

April 24, 2024 from 11:00am-12:30pm PT

Virtual Workshop via Zoom

The ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) System can detect earthquakes so quickly that alerts can be delivered to schools before they feel shaking. EEW technology can be integrated into school paging systems, phones, computers, and other communication systems to deliver pre-programmed alerts to students and teachers. By giving people time to protect themselves before dangerous shaking arrives, ShakeAlert can save lives.

Join earthquake scientists and educators from across the country to learn how school districts have used the ShakeAlert EEW System in their facilities. Topics will include:

How the ShakeAlert EEW System Works and Why It Matters

Case Studies from Schools in Washington, Oregon, and California

How to Integrate ShakeAlert Technology  Into School Facilities

Earthquake Science Education Materials from ShakeAlert Partners

This workshop is targeted toward K-12 school administrators, science teachers, technology directors, facility directors, and safety directors, but other interested individuals are welcome to participate. We encourage both an administrator with decision-making authority and a technical implementer from each school district to attend (ex. a superintendent and a technology director).

This event is hosted by the ShakeAlert Technical Users Working Group, including the University of Oregon, the U.S. Geological Survey, the California Institute of Technology, the University of California Berkeley, and the University of Washington.
